Soak in cool water (never hot water)
Thicker rawhide requires at least 24 hours soaking.

SOAK IN CLEAN CONTAINER:
It is vitally important that the container you soak your rawhide in be completely clean.  Any residue from cleaning fluids, dyes, even fruit juices that have dried on your pan or bucket will change the composition of the rawhide.  Example: soaking rawhide lace in a pan that has dried residue on it (even if you can't see it) will turn the rawhide  into rubber bands texture rendering it useless for anything.
